URA FC Junior Tax Collectors right-back Kayiwa Pascelo Martin was among the standout performers as Uganda’s U17 national team, the Cubs, clinched the 2026 CECAFA U17 Championship title to secure qualification for next year’s Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
Kayiwa played a key role in Uganda’s successful campaign in Kigali, Rwanda, featuring in every match throughout the tournament and underlining his consistency as the Cubs marched to the regional crown.
The URA FC youngster also demonstrated his composure under pressure in Monday’s final against Somalia at Kigali Pele Stadium, converting his penalty during the shootout as Uganda triumphed 6-5 following a goalless draw in normal time.
The final proved to be a tense affair, with neither side able to find a breakthrough during regulation time.
However, the Cubs held their nerve from the spot to emerge champions and confirm their place at the continental showpiece.
Goalkeeper David Dean Ssegirinya was Uganda’s hero in the shootout, saving three penalties to help his side secure victory.

His impressive performances throughout the competition earned him the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper award.
Kayiwa was among six Ugandan players who successfully converted their penalties, alongside captain Henry Muhozi, Sebastian Fisher, Arnold Kayemba, Nicholas Kawoya and Junior Ofoyrwoth. Sumaku Mutawakali and Arafat Ibanda were unable to convert their attempts.

Uganda’s triumph was further rewarded with individual accolades, as captain Muhozi was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Kayemba finished as the top scorer. Ssegirinya’s recognition as the best goalkeeper completed an impressive collection of individual awards for the champions.
For URA FC, Kayiwa’s contribution is another positive milestone for the club’s Junior Tax Collectors programme, with the defender gaining valuable international experience while representing his country on the regional stage.
His involvement in every match, coupled with his successful conversion in the decisive shootout, highlights the important role he played in Uganda’s championship-winning campaign.
The CECAFA U17 Championship served as the qualification pathway to the 2027 Africa U17 Cup of Nations, with Uganda, runners-up Somalia and third-placed Rwanda all earning places at next year’s continental tournament.
With the Cubs now crowned regional champions and their AFCON ticket secured, Kayiwa returns from the campaign having played his part in another significant achievement for Uganda’s youth football.
