In a milestone move for gender equality in Ugandan football as required by the Football Federation (FUFA) under the club licensing regulation for the upcoming 2024/25 season going forward, URA FC has acquired the Kawempe Muslim Ladies Junior team, marking the club’s first official women’s team in their history.
The announcement was made at the unveiling ceremony held at the URA headquarters in Nakawa on Monday.
URA FC CEO Allan Munaaba expressed the
club’s commitment to promoting gender equality and providing equal employment opportunities.
“We at URA football club have officially started the first-ever URA women’s football club through the acquisition of Kawempe Muslim Ladies Junior team to ensure gender equality and equal employment opportunities in consideration of the girl child,” said Munaaba.
“The team will initially be called URA-KAWEMPE Muslim Ladies Junior team and later on URA Women’s Football Club after a year in existence. We are looking forward to supporting the girl child in aspects of sports and future possible employment opportunities as per our strategic plan.”
The ceremony was attended by Kawempe Muslim Ladies team head coach Ayub Khalifah, club chairperson Wabwiire Hakim Tabu, and three players, all donning their blue and white jerseys featuring both club logos.
The jerseys also prominently displayed one of URA’s ongoing campaigns, “URA Mungalo,” which promotes accessing URA services via mobile phone by dialing *285#.
Coach Ayub Khalifah expressed his
enthusiasm about the partnership with URA FC.
“Achieving this milestone with such a big club/brand is a significant step for us, and we promise to give our best,” said Khalifah.
Kawempe Muslim Ladies Junior team, the 2023/24 Kampala Regional Women Football League Champions will compete in the FUFA Women Elite League for the 2024/25 season as URA-Kawempe Muslim Ladies Junior team. URA will take full control of the management and the team with immediate and after the first season, the team will be rebranded as URA Women’s Football Club. The team will host its games at the Kawempe Muslim playground.
